Feeling overwhelmed and stuck in your business? There’s one major mistake solopreneurs make that keeps them trapped in burnout and inefficiency.
If you're a solopreneur juggling multiple roles, the weight of managing every aspect of your business can feel paralyzing. Whether you're handling marketing, customer service, client delivery, product development, or finances, the endless to-do list can leave you exhausted and trapped in the box of "survival mode."
I see this all the time with the women I work with: high-achieving, passionate entrepreneurs who started their business for freedom but now feel trapped by the very thing they built. And if you’ve ever felt like you’re barely keeping your head above water, I want to remind you: you’re not failing—you're just carrying too much.
The #1 Mistake: The Superwoman Complex (Trying to Do It All Yourself)
One of the most common—and costly—mistakes solopreneurs make is the belief that success means doing everything alone, by your lonesome. Truth be told, this is a dangerous zone to live in. Aloneness leaves us digging into spaces of overthinking and under-acting on the things that will move our business and lives further. (Ask me how I know. I've been there and done that. I threw away the T-shirt and got the battle scars to prove it!) When you try to manage every task, you risk burnout, unproductiveness, and a constant deep feeling of being overwhelmed.
A story from Scripture perfectly illustrates this point:
Exodus 18:17-23 recounts how Moses was so inundated by trying to judge every dispute himself. His father-in-law, Jethro, wisely advised him to delegate responsibilities, appointing capable leaders to share the load. This timeless lesson reminds us that leadership—and success—often requires trusting others to share the vision we've been given with talented and masterful destiny helpers (business besties, team members, family, and friends who support and help you carry the vision forward) and building systems.
So why does burnout happen? Here are three main culprits:
Lack of Delegation: Believing that you must handle every detail independently. Why is it so hard for high performers and high achievers to ask for help? You are brilliant, and it's vital for you to operate in your God-given zone of magnificence to see the growth you want in yourself and the business. A weel
Absence of Systems: Operating without structured processes leads to constant firefighting.
Consider this: All the mega-businesses operate strategically from systems that keep the guesswork to a minimum. Imagine the lack of decision fatigue experienced in your day with the power of systems for how you do business. Imagine how easy it would be to hand over areas of your business that don't require your physical presence because you have simple systems to demonstrate and share with your growing team. This, my magnificent one, is freedom. I am singing and dancing around this office right now. Woohoo!
Unclear Priorities: Trying to do too many things simultaneously without a clear focus. I don't know about you, but I have found that this creative lady has many ideas, and my big-picture vision is excellent. However, the wisdom I've learned is to focus on the one thing that matters most. Taking the time to decipher that one thing is invaluable. Clarity is grown as we move in that ONE THING, not hundreds and hundreds of cool things.
Practical Steps to Break Free:
Acknowledge Your Limits: Yes, I know, business bestie. You are intelligent. You've got degrees and certifications and awards and all of the things. Yes, my friend, you can do a lot, but just because you can doesn't mean you should. What cost are you willing to pay- your joy, health, and relationships? The POWER MOVE here is to accept that you cannot—and shouldn't—do it all. The African proverb says, "If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together."
Systematize Your Business: Create processes for routine tasks. Whether automating social media posts or setting up an email marketing sequence, small systems free up valuable time. Time is oh so valuable. Let's maximize it on every level to get more out of the life we've been given. Time is our gift.
Delegate and Collaborate: Identify tasks that don't require your unique expertise. Consider partnering with freelancers, using virtual assistants, or outsourcing administrative tasks. For the time it will take you to do these tasks and the cost of skilled professionals doing it instead, you will save yourself the headache, frustration, and energy drain that comes with doing things that aren't in your toolset.
Prioritize Self-Care: Remember the invitation in Matthew 11:28:
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
Building in moments of rest isn't a luxury—it's a necessity for long-term success. We are not the Energizer Bunny. We were designed to have a rhythm of work and rest, not work, work, work, and then fall asleep on the desk to wake up and work again. Make it a priority to rest and seek ways to prioritize your well-being so you can serve at a higher level and give your best to those you serve.
A Personal Reflection:
I once worked with a brilliant solopreneur who was stressed out. Determined to control every aspect of her family, career, and side business, she soon became overwhelmed. After embracing delegation, she decided to give herself margin by hiring a house manager a few times a month. This decision allowed her to open space for creativity, growth, and genuine impact and to spend more quality time with her family.
Final Thoughts:
Business success isn't about doing more—it's about doing what matters most, efficiently and effectively. By recognizing the trap of trying to do everything alone and taking intentional steps to systematize and delegate, you can transition from burnout to breakthrough.
